Filipino champion Nonito Donaire added another title to this collection, outpointing Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez Jr Sunday to win the vacant WBO super bantamweight title at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Donaire dominated the fight, knocking down Vazquez in the ninth round, but could only surprisingly muster a split decision victory. Judges Levi Martinez and Don Trella scored the 117-110 for the Filipino, while Ruben Garcia gave the match, 115-112, to Vazquez.
After the match, Donaire’s left hand was soaked in blood after the removal of his glove, with the fighter fearing the hand might be broken.
But he showed few ill effects of the injury during the match, rocking Vazquez in the third round. Trying to draw his opponent out of his shell, Donaire even clowned around to taunt Vazquez, drawing some boos for the crowd, most of whom were Mexican fans anticipating the main event featuring Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. against Marco Antonio Rubio.
It was Donaire’s first fight at the 122-lb. division after winning titles at 112, 115, and 118 lbs.
